About the bunion condition

1. What can I do to help prevent my bunion from becoming worse?

  •     Wear as little high heels and pointed shoes as possible.
  •     Use bunion-specific foot orthoses for best protection.
  •     Try silicon toe spreader or night splint but their effectiveness is not known.
  •     Physiotherapist instructed foot and toe exercises.

2. If I have a family history of bunion condition, what is the chance of me developing it?

Genes play a strong role in majority bunion patients. You may have inherited bunion genes but their effects are random and there is no statistics yet of their expression among family members. Female hormones (estrogen) can also compound the risk greatly and tilt the gender-balance to 9 times more common among female than male.

3. When may I need to start considering surgical treatment?

Usually when conservative measures fail to control bunion related pain in the foot, leg or low back and the pain begins to interfere with daily activities. To prevent the development of arthritis of the affected big toe joint, surgery should be considered for severe bunion deformity in a relatively young and active person.

Dr. Wu's procedure was a walk in the park compared to what I went through having my previous operation. Dr. Wu is a very caring doctor and explained to me what was involved. He told me a tendon will grow in your foot and your bunion will be straightened out. He said he would not need to break it to straighten it. It is amazing! I do not have any callous on my feet and my feet are straight now. I highly recommend Dr. Wu and have the greatest respect and admiration for his invention.

My bunion feet have always prohibited me from selecting beautiful and fashionable shoes. I really did not dare to try the long recovering and painful, bone-breaking bunion surgery. Fortunately, with the recommendation by one of my doctor friends, I met with Dr. Wu and I underwent his non-bone-breaking syndesmosis procedure. After 4 months, my normal feet were restored without pain. My feet improved not only in look, but also function. If you can manage to walk a little less for 3 months, I would strongly recommend you to Dr. Wu's bunion surgery.

I wanted to keep you posted on the condition of my feet after the bunion operation in Hong Kong, as I have been so pleased with the results.

We have been living in Syndey for six months now and it is over a year since the plaster was removed from my feet. My feet not only look great but are feeling great. I have no foot pain and do a lot of walking.

I am careful to wear good shoes with the orthotics which were fitted in Hong Kong. I have not been able to find where I can have a foot scan. I would like to do so to send you the results for your records. It is over a year since I had the surgery, I am sure you will also be pleased with the results after this period of time. The 2nd and 3rd toes are starting to suit more flat. Previously they always had a "hammerhead" look to them, very raised at the joints.

I will always appreciate having this surgery done while I was in Hong Kong. I know I would not have had the invasive surgery they do for bunions, here in Australia. I hope your work can become known in other places where they still break and pin bones to fix bunions. I feel you have done groundbreaking work in developing this surgery and wish you well with future results. I will send some pictures soon and try to get a foot scan done.

Following my surgery last year I have been training hard to get back into shape for fencing - the photo shows my husband & I at the Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships in Singapore earlier this month - I was successful in being selected for the England Ladies team, winning a silver medal! I am so thrilled to be able to compete at this level again, which would not have been possible without Dr Wu's amazing surgery

"Hi All, I'm a patient of Dr. Wu's Bunion Centre. I am a figure skating coach and i had my bunion problem for 2 years since i start teaching long hours. In late 2009, i couldn't teach anymore because the pain irritates me badly.so i decided to do a surgery. Otherwise, my career would just end.

I did a lot of research on the internet.... I found this bunion center. I tempted to go for a try by it said " non- bone breaking ". As a sportsman, i have to consider the best of myself to lower the physical harm. I trusted this surgery could make me continue the sport. And Ya, It did!!

I had my Syndesmosis Procedure surgery a year ago. I'm totally recovered and back on the ice again after 6 months recovery. I'm thankful to have Dr. Wu repaired my feet and make my skating career continue. I just want to drop a message and a video to let you all know. It's really worth and i know this is the best way to help for the bunion problem. My feet are functioning very well now or even better than before.
